In every generation, mankind has struggled with the question of power; we are tempted to believe that through our own strength, wisdom, or determination we can shape the world, protect ourselves, or even overcome evil. History is full of examples where human pride has exalted itself; only to be brought low by weakness and failure. Scripture declares plainly: โCursed is the one who trusts in man, who draws strength from mere fleshโ (Jeremiah 17:5).
Alongside human ambition, there is another fascination that often captures the heart; the angelic. Angels are portrayed in the Bible as mighty beings who stand in the presence of God (YHWH) (Luke 1:19); who carry His messages; and who execute His commands. Because of their strength and glory, some have wondered if angels act as independent powers; or if humans can somehow call upon them as helpers apart from God (YHWH). But the Word of God (YHWH) offers no room for such error. Angels are never autonomous forces; they are, as Hebrews 1:14 describes, โministering spirits sent to serve those who will inherit salvation.โ
The contrast between human power and the angelic role is striking. Human power is limited, frail, and temporary. Angels, though far more glorious in strength, are not free agents; they operate only under the authority of Christ Jesus. When an angel shut the mouths of lions to protect Daniel (Daniel 6:22); it was by the command of God (YHWH). When an angel released Peter from prison (Acts 12:7); it was not for Peterโs glory but to advance the mission of Christ Jesus. Even at the resurrection of Christ Jesus, when an angel rolled away the stone (Matthew 28:2); it was not a display of his own power but obedience to the risen Lord.
This truth brings us to a sobering reflection: both human beings and angels find their purpose not in self-exaltation; but in submission to Christ Jesus. Human pride says, โI can do this on my own.โ Angelic glory might suggest, โI have power in myself.โ Yet both are false paths. There is only one source of true authority, true power, and true glory; Christ Jesus Himself, to whom all heaven and earth are subject (Matthew 28:18).
So what does this mean for us? It means that relying on our own strength will always lead to frustration and defeat. It means that seeking angelic intervention outside of Christ Jesus is a dangerous distortion of the truth. And it means that real power, whether displayed through human weakness or angelic might, is always found in obedience to Christ Jesus.
In a world obsessed with power; whether human achievement, spiritual mysteries, or angelic wonderโwe are reminded that both man and angel exist for the glory of one King. Our task is not to exalt our own power; nor to seek angels as though they were gods; but to walk humbly under the Lordship of Christ Jesus. For in Him alone we find the strength to endure, the help of heaven, and the promise of eternal life.
Through Christ Jesus, human weakness is made strong; the angelic host finds its purpose; and all creation bows before the One who reigns forever.
