Jezebel’s rise to power brought an unprecedented level of moral decay; she orchestrated murders to eliminate opposition, silencing prophets and leaders who dared speak God’s (YHWH) truth. The murder of Naboth, whose vineyard she coveted, stands as a chilling example of how greed and manipulation can pervert justice (1 Kings 21); in that act, Jezebel displayed not only cruelty but the audacity to challenge God (YHWH)’s law itself.
Blackmail became a common tool under her rule; those who opposed her were threatened, intimidated, and coerced into silence. Authority was wielded not to uphold righteousness, but to bend others to her will; Jezebel’s manipulation extended even into the temple of worship, where priests and temple leaders were pressured to participate in practices contrary to God’s (YHWH) commands. Her influence turned a place meant for divine encounter into a theatre of control and fear.
Among her most trusted agents was Sarah, a cunning and ambitious scribe who quickly rose in influence by aligning herself with Jezebel’s agenda. Once known for her piety, Sarah’s hunger for power soon eclipsed any trace of reverence. With a deceptive smile and polished tongue, she rewrote sacred texts to serve the queen’s narrative—twisting the words of the prophets, silencing rebukes, and inserting false promises of divine favour for those loyal to the crown. She orchestrated elaborate ceremonies filled with pageantry and pretence, luring the people into idolatry while claiming it was all in the name of God (YHWH).
Sarah did not merely follow orders; she devised strategies to discredit true prophets, planting forged letters and orchestrating public accusations to turn the people against them. Her false teachings spread like rot, infecting the hearts of priests and laypeople alike. She turned the scrolls into tools of propaganda, the altar into a stage, and worship into manipulation. Her influence was subtle, cloaked in religious language, but her hands were soaked in the blood of truth betrayed.
Deceit permeated every layer of this era; prophets of God (YHWH) were discredited, sacred rituals were distorted, and the people were led astray. Jezebel’s cunning ensured that appearances were maintained while the heart of the temple of worship and the nation turned away from holiness; lies and false promises were used to control, confuse, and corrupt both leaders and laypeople alike.
Even the land itself seemed to reflect the devastation of this time; the spiritual badlands of Israel, once fertile with faith and obedience, became barren under Jezebel’s influence. Communities suffered not only because of moral corruption, but because God (YHWH)’s favor is withdrawn where disobedience prevails; the prophets cried out, warning the people, yet many continued in complacency, unaware of the dangerous path they trod.
Yet even in the midst of this disastrous era, God (YHWH)’s justice and mercy remained evident; the prophetic voice of Elijah challenged Jezebel and called the people back to repentance. Though Jezebel wielded murder, blackmail, and deceit, she could not escape the authority of God (YHWH); through Christ Jesus, the righteous are reminded that evil, no matter how entrenched, is never victorious over the divine plan.
This era of Jezebel serves as a cautionary tale; it warns against the corrupting influence of power when divorced from God (YHWH)’s righteousness. It reminds us that murder, blackmail, and deceit leave lasting scars on both people and the temple of worship itself; and it reassures us that, despite the spiritual badlands of a generation, restoration is possible for those who turn to God (YHWH) and seek alignment with Christ Jesus.
Through Christ Jesus, we can learn that true authority is exercised with justice, truth, and humility; through Christ Jesus, even the darkest eras can be illuminated by the light of divine righteousness; and through Christ Jesus, the hearts of the faithful can remain steadfast, resisting the lure of corruption and standing firm in the power of God (YHWH).
