In Mark 6:4, Jesus declared, “A prophet is not without honour, but in his own country, and among his own kin, and in his own house.” These words came after He returned to His hometown of Nazareth, where the people who had known Him since childhood refused to believe in His divine authority. They saw Him only as the carpenterโs son, failing to recognize that the wisdom and power He displayed were from God (YHWH). Their hearts were hardened, and because of their unbelief, Jesus performed few miracles there (Mark 6:5-6). This passage serves as a reminder that familiarity can often breed contempt, and those closest to us may struggle to accept the calling God (YHWH) has placed on our lives.
This theme is echoed throughout Scripture. Joseph, beloved by his father Jacob, was despised by his brothers, who could not accept the dreams God (YHWH) had given him (Genesis 37:5-11). Moses, chosen to deliver Israel, was met with skepticism by his own people (Exodus 2:14). Even David, anointed by God (YHWH), was overlooked by his own family before being chosen as king (1 Samuel 16:10-13). Time and again, Godโs (YHWH) chosen servants have faced rejection from those who should have supported them most. Yet, their faithfulness in the face of opposition led to the fulfillment of Godโs (YHWH) promises.
For believers today, this passage is both a warning and an encouragement. It warns us not to let familiarity blind us to Godโs (YHWH) work in others and encourages us to remain steadfast when we face rejection. The world may not recognise Godโs (YHWH) calling in our lives, and even those closest to us may doubt us, but our validation comes from God (YHWH) alone. Just as Jesus continued His ministry despite rejection, we too must walk in obedience, knowing that in due time, God (YHWH) will honour those who remain faithful to His calling.
Through Christ Jesus we can remain certain in our salvation; and ensure we continue to pray for our prophets in a way that is pleasing to God (YHWH).
