“Can You Lift Me?”: Burden Or Bondage

In the book of Revelation, Babylon the Great is presented as powerful, wealthy, and influential. She represents a world system built on pride, luxury, and independence from God (YHWH). At first glance she appears impressive, almost as if she can carry the desires of humanity and lift people to a higher place in life.

But Scripture reveals a different picture.

Instead of lifting people, Babylon becomes a heavy weight. Like a burden placed on the shoulders of the world, she grows larger and heavier the more people rely on her. Her promises of wealth, status, and pleasure attract many, yet those promises slowly bind the heart.

The pursuit of riches becomes exhausting. The desire for recognition never ends. The pressure to keep up with the world creates anxiety and emptiness. What once looked like opportunity begins to feel like a chain.

In this way Babylon is not a support but a load. She rests on societies, shaping their values and pulling them further away from God (YHWH). Nations measure success by wealth and power. Individuals measure worth by possessions and reputation. The weight becomes greater with every generation.

This is why the book of Revelation speaks of Babylon’s eventual fall. A system built without God (YHWH) cannot stand forever. When it collapses, the burden it carried with it will also disappear.

Christ Jesus offers the opposite of what Babylon gives. Instead of adding weight to human lives, he invites the weary to come to him for rest. Where Babylon creates pressure and bondage, Christ Jesus brings freedom and peace.

The contrast is clear. Babylon appears strong but becomes a heavy burden. Christ Jesus appears humble yet truly lifts the soul.

So the question remains. Is Babylon something that lifts humanity, or is she simply a weight that keeps people bound?

According to Scripture, what looks powerful in the world may actually be the very burden holding it down.
