From the beginning of creation, sound and rhythm have carried meaning. Scripture tells us that the morning stars sang together and all creation declared the glory of God (YHWH). Music was never meant to be empty noise; it was designed as an expression of worship, identity, and alignment with the heart of God (YHWH). Yet in today’s culture, music often reflects two opposing rhythms; the rhythm of the world and the rhythm of the Word.
The rhythm of the world is loud, persuasive, and emotionally powerful. It often appeals to the flesh, magnifies self, and normalises rebellion, pride, lust, and despair. While it may sound appealing, its message can subtly pull hearts away from truth. Just as Pharaoh’s Egypt surrounded Israel with a culture contrary to God’s (YHWH) will, the world’s rhythm seeks to shape our thoughts, desires, and values without us even realising it.
The rhythm of the Word, however, flows from God’s (YHWH) truth and purpose. It is rooted in worship, obedience, and reverence. This rhythm does not always match the beat of popular culture, but it carries life, peace, and clarity. David understood this when he played before the Lord; his music did not merely entertain, it shifted atmospheres, drove away darkness, and glorified God (YHWH). Music aligned with the Word carries spiritual weight because it points hearts back to the Creator, not the creation.
As Christians, discernment is essential. Music is not neutral; it teaches, influences, and forms spiritual habits. What we allow into our ears eventually settles in our hearts. When our playlists consistently echo the rhythm of the world, we may find ourselves out of step with God’s (YHWH) voice. When we choose music that honours Him, we train our spirits to recognise His presence and respond in obedience.
This does not mean every song must sound the same or fit one style. God (YHWH) is creative, and worship can take many forms. The question is not the genre, but the spirit behind it; does the music glorify God (YHWH) or glorify self? Does it draw us closer to holiness or pull us towards compromise? Does it echo the truth of the Word or the confusion of the world?
Just as Moses had to turn away from Egypt’s influence to follow God’s (YHWH) calling, we too must decide which rhythm will guide our lives. The rhythm of the Word leads to freedom, identity, and spiritual strength. It aligns our hearts with heaven and reminds us who truly reigns. When our lives move to God’s (YHWH) rhythm, everything else begins to fall into divine order, all for the glory of God (YHWH).
