In every age, humanity celebrates strength, wisdom, and power. We lift up heroes, leaders, and visionaries—“men of renown”—who appear to shape the world. Yet Scripture issues a sobering reminder: no matter how powerful or influential a person may be on earth, none of it guarantees entry into the Kingdom of Heaven. Christ Jesus Himself gives one of the most chilling warnings in all of Scripture: “And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity” (Matthew 7:23). This is not mere hyperbole. It is a prophecy. It will certainly come true.
Throughout the Bible, we are warned about a time of great spiritual deception. The devil and his demons roam free, confusing even the leaders of the flock. Pastors today wrestle with whether to cast out, bind, rebuke, or vanquish the forces of darkness. And yet the Word of God (YHWH) remains clear: power alone does not equal salvation. Works alone do not equal salvation. Titles alone do not equal salvation. Christ Jesus warns us that on the final day, some will claim to have performed miracles in His name—yet He will say, “I never knew you” (Matthew 7:22–23).
Let’s get one thing straight. A superhero saves the day. But for Christians, there is only one true superhero—Christ Jesus. He alone saves from sin, death, and hell. Hell cannot be the destiny of a true believer in Christ Jesus, but the Bible clearly shows that no matter how spiritually powerful or gifted a person appears, without faith and obedience to Christ Jesus, they will hear those dreadful words: “Depart from Me.” This is not an empty threat. It is biblical prophecy.
Many people think of spiritual danger only in terms of Hollywood horror stories—hauntings, ghouls, or ghosts. But the Bible actually speaks of these realities, though not in the sensationalised way the world does. It warns us that there are “doctrines of demons” (1 Timothy 4:1) and that “our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms” (Ephesians 6:12, NIV). Whether believer or unbeliever, the warning must be heeded.
Our enemy, the devil, is described in 1 Peter 5:8 as “a roaring lion, walking about, seeking whom he may devour.” This stark warning reminds us that spiritual attacks are real and relentless. They require vigilance, discernment, and above all, a life anchored in Christ Jesus. For only those who belong to Him—not merely by profession, but by faith, obedience, and relationship—will be safe from the ultimate condemnation.
What, then, is Christ Jesus’ warning truly about? It is not about denying good works. It is about exposing false confidence—confidence in self, in miracles, in ministry, or in reputation rather than in Christ Jesus alone. Salvation is not earned. It is received by grace through faith (Ephesians 2:8–9). Without this foundation, even the most celebrated “heroes” of the faith will find themselves outside the gates of Heaven.
The call is urgent and clear: examine yourself. Not in fear, but in faith. Build your house on the rock of Christ Jesus, not on the shifting sands of self-reliance. Know Him, walk with Him, and trust Him—not your works, your title, or your influence. Then, when you stand before Him, you will not hear “Depart from Me,” but instead, “Well done, good and faithful servant” (Matthew 25:23).
In a world obsessed with power and self-made heroes, the Bible reorients our focus. True salvation, true security, and true victory are not found in our strength but in Christ Jesus alone. He is the only one who saves. He is the only one who redeems. He is the only one who will never say to His own, “Depart from Me.”
